Chandrabagha, Dorze negotiating a pathless stretch after the avalanche devastation.
Chandrabhaga river flowing through the snout of an avalanche, grey snow with mud and avalanche debris. I was trekking up the Chandrabhaga valley after the terrible avalanches of Spring 1979. It was frightening, both the path (or lack of it) that had to be crossed and being an insignificant puppet amidst such power.
Chandrabhaga valley, after a gruelling days walk through the devastation we were relieved to arrive at this Rest House, Raoli. Previous travellers had used some of the floorboards for fuel

Chandrabhaga Valley. Dorze in the midst of the avalanche destruction. There had been a heavy fall of late snow. Then avalanches destroyed villages and the wind ahead of it tore babies out of their father’s arms. And devastated villages, including stores of food and seed. After crossing the Sach Pass and coming down into Chandrabhaga valley I found the way along hazardous and frightening.
